The sky is French Blue the White was mixed with a little Mastic Varnish

The transparent parts of the trees occurring in the sky are in water-colour.

Water-colour on an oil ground I find will bear the application of oils or turpentine but not spirit of wine.

Scene in the Leasowes, of part of Virgil's Grove the same in subject as 41

Varnished with White Lue varnish March 14th 1839.

This Lue varnish at first "brought out"

the picture well but it soon appeared to be in danger of bringing it off having cracked (for the time) visibly.

Have today taken off the varnish with slight injury to the picture. April 4th / 39

Varnished slightly with mastic and re-painted it April 9th.

A second course (slight) of Mastic given June 5th.

Varnished with my mastic Jan 1st 1840
